The city of Pelham is located in Shelby County and is part of the Birmingham – Hoover Metropolitan area. The Pelham, Alabama 35124 area covers 39 square miles and the population in Pelham is over 21,000.

Pelham is conveniently located next to I65 and is twenty miles South of downtown Birmingham and close to major shopping areas like The Galleria and Summit.

Pelham has won several awards in the past few years, the city was listed on Sperling’s Best Places to Live and the city was voted as the ‘Best Place to Live in Alabama for 2018” again by MONEY.

Schools in Pelham

The city has two K-5 schools: Pelham Oaks Elementary School and Pelham Ridge Elementary School. The middle school is Pelham Park Middle School and the High School is Pelham High School. Pelham Ridge Elementary and Pelham Park Middle School are recently built schools.

The city also has a new Public Library and a Recreation Center (which opened in 2018) which are in the same location as the new Middle School. The Recreation Center is part of Pelham City Park and has tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, and a pavilion alongside the building. Across the street there are four baseball fields. A new dog park has also been added and a splash pad! The dog park has two sections: one enclosure for small dogs and one enclosure for large dogs.

The city of Pelham offers a lot of activities for its residents. From laser tag, bowling, and even the inflatable park: Pump it Up, there’s no shortage of things to do for any age. It has its own ice skating rink inside the Civic Center, which is home to the local Birmingham Hockey team, the Birmingham Bulls. 

Next door to the Civic Center is an amphitheater where residents can enjoy outdoor concerts.

There is also a Racquet Club and a local YMCA.

You can even learn to scuba dive! Blue Water Park was created from a quarry. The park is only open to the public Friday through Sunday.

The city is home to several dog parks and its own state park, Oak Mountain State Park. Oak Mountain offers a lot of attractions including camping, biking, swimming, hiking, and outdoor events. Oak Mountain also has a Wildlife Refuge Center and its own golf course. 

It is also home to an award winning golf course, Ballantrae. Ballantrae’s most recent award was being voted the ‘The Most Beautiful ClubHouse in Alabama’ by Architectural Digest. Ballantrae is an 18 hole golf course known for its grand Scottish Clubhouse.

Pelham City Hall

Some local shops are Meyers Plants and Pottery for gardens, Summer Classics for outdoor furniture, Cahaba Cycles for bikes, and Oak Mountain Hobbies and Toys for drones and trains. It also has its own painting store called Party Art.
